We are proud to announce the recent launch of Weavings.org. The Weavings journal offers a space where questions posed by contemporary life and the spiritual resources of the Christian heritage can encounter and illuminate one another. The journal strives to create a forum in which contributors and readers can converse on important matters of common concern. Big Heart Design worked with editors of the beloved journal to help develop a new web and social media strategy that stays true to the journal’s roots, while embracing the ever-changing world of new media. Going Gothic to save money

A Wisconsin university has found a new way to cut costs with e-mail — by changing the font. The University of Wisconsin, Green Bay has switched the default font on its e-mail system from Arial to Century Gothic. The university says the change sounds minor, but it will save money on printer ink when students print out e-mails in the new font.

Shel Silverstein: Still teaching an old dog new tricks

Last night I found myself picking through the NPR archives online and ran across a recent feature they produced, it detailed the release of a musical tribute album featuring the music of Shel Silverstein. One of Silverstein’s closest friends, Bobby Bare Sr. and his son, Bobby Bare Jr. produced the compilation of songs written by Silverstein; it features such artists as Frank Black (Pixies), Lucinda Williams, My Morning Jacket and Todd Snider. I was surprised to learn that the poet I had grown up reading had written such classic songs as A Boy Named Sue, The Cover of the Rolling Stone, and The Ballad of Lucy Jordan.

Life’s truths don’t require special effects

The beauty of a great film like Toy Story is that each of us is touched in different ways. Most often the ways we are affected by the story is based on our own life journey. Toy Story touches on some universal topics: our need to be loved and accepted by others; our want to find a home; and the power of groups/family. These three topics are the undercurrent tying the trilogy together.

We’re all living in a time of constant upheaval and change. It’s nice to be reminded that at our core, each of us simply long to be loved and belong. Don’t let the animation fool you Toy Story 3 is very much a film that we all need to see, no matter our age.

As I’ve shared with many of you before, I am a former student of Red Bird Mission School. While my family only lived in Southeastern Kentucky for a few years, I’m proud to claim that the people of Red Bird Mission and the school helped to shape my life. The following United Methodist News Service article details the dire state that the school is currently facing. The world is ‘abuzz’ with vuvuzelas

Vuvuzela has become my new favorite term. The incessant “buzzing” noise that I heard is being created by a long plastic blow horn that South African soccer fans use to cheer on their team. It’s become such a buzz (pun intended) with European and American fans that organizers considered banning the horns; they ultimately have decided to keep them. An annoyance, I do think it comical that ESPN has spent hundreds of millions of dollars to sponsor the World Cup, and will ultimately lose its shirt on the deal because of a plastic blow horn. Soccer greenhorns like myself will turn tail and run at the first sound of buzzing.
